We hope that you find our web page informative and helpful in obtaining information on the Beauceron more popularly known as the Bas Rouge in it's native France. Whether you already own a Beauceron or are looking into the purchase of one please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have. Our breeding goal has always been to produce quality working dogs of excellent health and structure. We have owned Beauceron since the late 1980s and travel to France and Belgium often.
Beaucerons are used by the French police and Army, as well as being a popular sport dog for French Ring Sport, Pistage (Tracking), Schutzhund, Agility, and Herding. They are also used as Search and Rescue dogs, Therapy dogs and are enjoyed especially for their companionship, loyalty, trainability, and protective nature.
Our dogs are from the top French working lines (Loutre Noire, Cite des Grands Feux and Ru D'Oly). These bloodlines are famous for producing working dogs of good temperament, health and structure. We have sold dogs to become police dogs, search and rescue dogs, schutzhund and ring sport dogs as well as family pets since the early 1990s.
Here are some of the more famous dogs that we have been fortunate to own: Champion de la Loutre Noire, the only French Ring III Selectifs, Mondio Ring III, Recommande Beauceron in North America. (Champion left us on August 30, 1998. He is deeply missed. His death was 6 days prior to his 12th birthday.). We are also the proud owners of CH.Indy des Coteaux du Petit Gris, Ring III French Import, Champion of Mexico, 4 CACIBs. Indy is now living back in France near Lyon as a house dog where he is available at stud. We titled the first Beaucerons in French Ring Sport in the United States as well as the first Beauceron to CD (placing first high in trial) Our Fidele was the first RBKC Beauceron Champion and her daughter, Havana was the first American bred Mexican Champion. We have sold dogs for police work, Prison guard, Search and Rescue, Schutzhund, French Ring Sport, Frisbee sport, agility, Herding, conformation showing, Obedience, Family companion and Protection work. CH.Fidele de la Loutre Noire is our livestock guardians and retired from breeding. Havoc de la Loutre Noire, French Import, pointed, 9 years old was our house dog and special boy for 9 years since we picked him up in France as a puppy. He passed on on Tuesday, January 22, 2002. Havoc is missed by us, family and friends.
We raise 1-2 litters of Beauceron per year so it is important to contact us early as normally many of our puppies are reserved in advance. We extensively socialize our puppies starting when they are newborns with early neurological stimulations or "super puppy program" as coined by the US Military. Also, with the help of friends and their children, we expose them to cats, other dogs and different surroundings. I feel that it is important to be around the puppies from birth until they go to their new homes and feel that it is necessary to be at home with them. If I worked a job that required me to leave the home for long hours most days then I would never consider breeding the dogs.
I suggest when considering purchasing from any breeder to always visit their home. Beware of breeders who insist on meeting you at a dog show or hotel or airport. Insist on seeing the dogs home environment. It's fine to meet at dog shows also. If you personally cannot visit the breeder's kennel then it's important to have a friend, family member or trainer (or trainer's friend) visit the kennel to see how the dogs are raised and what training is actually done with them. Ask the breeder how many dogs they own and keep at their home and how many litters do they raise per year. Also, find out who takes care of the dogs or are they left alone while the breeder works full time? There are some breeders that house 20-50 dogs in small runs or crates most of the day and are home rarely to even look in on the dogs and puppies. Please do your research before purchasing a puppy or dog from anyone over the Internet and be sure they can back up what they say and be sure that the dogs and puppies are raised in good conditions. The Beauceron are our passion (hobby) that my husband and I cherish. We are 100% dedicated and make the sacrifices necessary so that I can stay home with our beloved dogs and raise and train them.
Also, when Breeders make claims of being the 'ONLY" or "FIRST", be sure and do your homework and see if this is true. If you see they have false advertisement, what else might be false? There is a breeder in North America that claims to be the only North American breeder that travels to France and competes with his dogs. This is obviously not true since we've been going to France and also entering dogs at the National D'Elevage (Beauceron Specialty) for years. Others also travel to France to attend events. It's not an exclusive activity of one breeder. Also, the same breeder suggests that other breeders do not have purebred Beaucerons and are breeding cross-bred dogs. This is highly unlikely since all imported dogs are required to have DNA on file with AKC; all frequently used sires must have DNA on file and all stud dogs that have semen collected (Frozen or Cooled) must have DNA profiles done. Since the breed is very rare in North America, many dogs are no more than 1 generation away from imports if that. This is a "marketing" gimmick and scare tactics.
We are involved in the Beauceron Rescue effort as well since our introduction to the Beauceron over 20 years ago. If you want more information on rescue dogs that are available or to be put on a list for a rescue Beauceron, please contact me and also visit our Re-home page.
Because we are active in Ring Sport, we have the advantage of socializing and training the young puppies in a working environment as well. This means that starting at a young age, they play puppy bite work and retrieve games with various people and during a lot of distractions (dogs being worked, barking dogs, gun-shots, clatter stick and with groups of people).
We strongly believe in training potential breeding stock. We do not feel that raising dogs in a kennel and showing dogs in conformation shows exclusively is the correct way to breed and select breeding stock. Only by working dogs and training in a discipline (herding, Schutzhund, MondioRing, SAR, Police, tracking, etc.) can one really know the temperament and trainability of a dog. Training and working dogs place a certain amount of "stress" and puts rules and conditions on the dog and shows you the true temperament of a dog.
I work at home and spend the majority of my time with our dogs that live here. This includes training the dogs in Ring Sports (Agility, Obedience, Protection) and also many runs with the dogs during the week when I go horseback riding through our backcountry. We are fortunate to own acreage in a very rural mountain area in Southern California. The dogs and I are able to go for miles without encountering fences or another ranch and there are streams and ponds and many mountain trails for the dogs to enjoy. My husband, Ron is a project superintendent - heavy construction. Ron is has been certified French Ring Decoy, Mondio Ring Decoy, Certified NAPD Decoy and accomplished training decoy. During the evenings we train the dogs on our field. Our dogs are part of our lifestyle and they go where we go whenever possible. The dogs come indoors with us at different times. They also have large cross fenced "play area" to romp in with each other. Our main emphasis in breeding Beauceron will continue to be to produce agile, stable dogs and healthy and sound structure. All of our dogs have hip certifications. Our dogs are also X-rayed for elbow dysplasia, and eyes are checked. To check out any Beauceron or other breed for hip and elbow certifications, visit the O.F.A. website: www.offa.org We feed a raw diet and supplement with quality grain-free kibble such as Innova Evo, Canidae Salmon. \
We are members of the following associations: American Belgian Malinois Club ABMC Code of Ethic Breeders , United States Mondioring Association (USMRA), Club des Amis du Beauceron (French Beauceron Club), Temecula Kennel Club, Riverside County Animal Disaster Team, Sage Working Dog Club (founding members).
I now work with two friends that are also
long time Beauceron owners, trainers and enthusiasts -
Debbie Pluss and Cris Maxwell of Ramona, California.
We still produce only a couple litters per year and believe
in "Quality over Quantity". My two co-breeders help in
the puppy raising and evaluation and training of the
Beaucerons. Debbie Pluss has been active in Schutzhund
and Conformation showing for over 20 years, previous member of the San Diego Sherriff's SAR unit,
and also a 2 year volunteer with Leashes for Living (a service
dog group) and lives on a large
ranch in the Ramona foothills. Cris Maxwell is a long
time Doberman owner and competes in about every dog sport
you can think to name. She is a professional trainer
and lives in rural Ramona, CA. We all participate in
Protection Sports, Dock Diving and Conformation showing and
Pet Expos (breed education). We believe with our
combined knowledge and dedication that Les Ombres Valeureux
dogs will continue to be some of the top quality Beaucerons
in the world and our bloodline will continue to be
competitive and sought after in France as well as the USA.
